A comprehensive dental exam is like a full-body check-up, but just for your mouth. It is usually done at your first visit with a new dentist or every few years to make sure everything’s in good shape. Your first visit usually takes about one and a half to two hours. You will first visit with the doctor and then see one of our incredible hygienists.

First Visit

1. Review your medical history

Dr. Swiger will ask about your medical history, any meds you take, and past dental work or issues. He will also ask about lifestyle habits or any indications of snoring or chronic fatigue.

2. Oral Cancer Screening

Dr. Swiger will check your mouth, tongue, cheeks and even your neck for any unusual lumps, bumps or spots.

3. Gum Check

Using a tiny tool, Dr. Craig D. Swiger will measure how healthy your gums are, looking for signs of gum disease like redness, swelling or bleeding.

4. Look for Cavities Check Your Fillings and Crowns

Dr. Swiger will check each tooth for signs of decay and any past work like fillings, crowns or bridges will be checked to make sure they are still working properly.

5. Bite and Jaw Check

We will ask you to bite down and move your jaw around to see how everything lines up and functions. If you clench or grind your teeth (especially at night), we look for signs of wear or stress.

6. X-Rays

These help spot things that can’t be seen with the naked eye, like cavities, infections or bone loss. X-rays also help see anything hiding between teeth or under old fillings.

7. Photos or Digital Scan

Our dentist may ask one of his assistants to take photos of your teeth or digitally scan your mouth if needed for future work or tracking changes.

8. Talk About a Game Plan

If you need anything done-crowns, root canal treatment, fillings, orthodontics, etc. Our dentist will walk you through your options and our administrative team will discuss scheduling and payment arrangements.

9. Dental Hygiene appointment

We will determine what type of professional dental cleaning you need and, in most cases, you will see one of our amazing hygienists the same day.
